Original Sweet Counter Place Value

Using the 'currency' of sweets, 
the concept of place value, 
is displayed at a glance.

Jars, boxes and individual sweets are used here to represent hundreds, tens and units so children are able to see their value.

The colourful, laminated sweet jars are clearly marked with 100 and the boxes with 10. The reverse side shows the 100 in words as 1 hundred, the 10 as 1 ten and the unit as 1. The individual sweets are in strips of ten and can be cut into individual or joined units.

The pack includes 20 jars, 30 boxes and 200 joined units, and 35 photocopiable worksheets.

The Sweet counter place value set is one of my favourite resources. It is highly motivating and provides a strong visual model for understanding place value and calculations. Many children I have taught have experienced success through the use of the resource and have, significantly, retained the understanding and transferred it into other areas of maths.
